Hillel at LSU has a long and rich history. Originally founded in 1948, Hillel maintained a strong presence on campus for several decades. However, Hillel has faced times where memberships numbers have been low and the organization has dissolved at points in its history. One such period occurred in the early 2000s, even though there were still several Jewish students at LSU.

One evening, two students made a trip to the local Walmart to pick up a few items. While standing in line, they noticed that the person in front of them was wearing a tshirt with Hebrew letters on it. They tapped this person on the shoulder, asked him if he was Jewish, and identified themselves as Jewish students at LSU. Together, these three helped revitalize Hillel at LSU into the organization that is found on campus today. With over 50 members attending several events throughout the year, Hillel has been growing steadily since that moment in the check-out line.
